Maxillofacial Unit - Research and Audit

Research and Audit

The department is actively involved in research.  It would appear to be the only unit in the UK to have a Maxillofacial Surgeon holding the post of Professor of Surgery.  In addition to clinical research carried out within the department itself, there are a number of laboratory based research projects in collaboration with the University of Portsmouth and The Wolfson Institute, University College London.  We are very fortunate to work closely with Professor Salvador Moncada FRS, one of the worlds leading scientists.

We have two specialist registrars (Mr M Ethunandan and Mr S Sharma), currently undertaking higher research degrees under the direction of Professor Brennan. The team have won  a number of national and international research prizes and are currently in receipt of research grants from The Royal College of Surgeons of England, The British Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons worth over £30,000.

A small selection of recently published papers from the Maxillofacial Department:

Protocols for follow up of malignant salivary tumours

DNA microarray technology: insights for oral and maxillofacial surgeons
