A minimum skill set was developed for all registered nurses and midwives to standardise the role and define the new responsibilities required.

Mentorship is an inherent part of nursing. Mentoring student nurses and other health professionals is no longer seen as an add on role for the qualified, experienced nurse but as an integral part of being a competent practicing registered nurse.
Learning Beyond Registration (LBR) is about the continued professional and educational development of the nursing workforce. Local and national strategies focus upon modernising nursing careers, embracing an all-graduate profession and developing a flexible and responsive workforce.
Evidence based practice has been described as “doing the right things right” and developing a culture in which good decisions are made.
Appraisal and personal development review (APDR) is everybody’s responsibility and should be a ongoing process throughout the year. A critical part of the appraisal process is KSF, it should be used to inform the review by providing a clear framework of the knowledge and skills required.
