Inpatient services

At any one time approximately 11% of inpatients have diabetes.  Diabetes is a complex disease but with added pressures such as acute illness, intercurrent infection, surgery, rehabilitation or simply being an inpatient away from normal routines, managing diabetes can be very challenging for both the patient and health care professional.

The Diabetes Inpatient Project, Portsmouth (DIPP) is a pioneering endevour which involves the use of diabetes specialist teams into different areas of medicine and surgery. Portsmouth is one of the few hospitals across the country offering such a service and the aim is to improve quality of care for any diabetes patient admitted to hospital- for any reason.

The specialist diabetes inpatient team offer support, advice and education to health care professionals and patients.

The following support is offered to the wards.  In most cases any action taken is done in discussion with the patient:

  • Management of intravenous insulin infusions
  • Advice on appropriate initiation of insulin and oral anti-diabetic agents
  • Education for new insulin starts
  • Adjustment of insulin and oral anti-diabetic agents
  • Diabetes discharge planning
  • Staff education – ‘on the spot’ or organised groups
  • Patient education – on the ward or referral to appropriate outpatient services
  • Follow up post discharge
