Diabetes Specialist Nurses

Lisa Skinner

Lisa joined the department in 2000 and is the Senior Nurse with responsibility for the development of the nursing team and is also a part of the management team for the unit.

Her clinical speciality interests are intensified insulin management and patient education.  Her clinical activities reflect this with her providing services for those newly diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes, in the young persons clinic, intensive insulin and insulin pump clinics, rapid access clinics, patient education services and inpatient services.

Anita Thynne
Anita Thynne

Anita qualified as an RGN in 1995 completed a BSc Hons in Nursing in 1998 and a Post Graduate Certificate in Education in 2000.  She leads the inpatient diabetes service supporting ward staff to manage the complexities of diabetes in an acutely unwell state or during surgery.     

Alongside her general outpatient clinics she is involved in developing a link between recurrent young person admissions and the young persons service. 

Another specialist area she is involved in is the diabetes pregnancy service caring for ladies who have pre-existing diabetes and those who develop diabetes during pregnancy.  Anita is also involved in basal bolus insulin conversion groups and is the audit lead in the department 

Sarah Moutter
Sarah Moutter

Sarah, who has been a Diabetes Specialist Nurse since 2001, is the lead Diabetes Nurse for the pregnancy service.

She is a trained educator for the DESMOND programme (Diabetes Education Self-Management and Ongoing and Newly diagnosed) and facilitates patient groups (3 sessions a month).She has also recently joined as the lead Nurse in ED services.

 

Sarah also manages an intermediate nurse led unit within Portsmouth PCT and sees patients that have been referred by primary care practices who have sub-optimal control and require education to help them self-manage their diabetes. She is working with a group of surgeries within Portsmouth City who have joined together to form a GP Alliance.

Jo Buchanan
Jo Buchanan

 Jo joined the Portsmouth Diabetes Team on a secondment basis in 2004 working with inpatients as a Nurse specialist. She got her permanent contract in 2005 and at this time also became involved in post transplant renal Diabetes.

Jo is the nurse lead for diabetes patients with renal problems and undertakes nurse-led clinics within the renal department and the Diabetes centre. She also has an active role in diabetes management of renal inpatients and patients on dialysis.

In a group setting she also leads on Starting Insulin. She is also a part of the National Renal Diabetes Forum and the Diabetes Inpatient Forum.

 

Jane Rowney
Jane Rowney

Jane Rowney joined the diabetes team in 2006. She works as a Diabetes Specialist Nurse with responsibilities for inpatients within a busy large general Hospital and is  Lead Nurse in the development of inpatient diabetes care within the Department of Medicine for the Elderly.

She also holds outpatient’s clinics within the hospital and at satellite clinics within the area.

She also has responsibilities for group education for initiating insulin for patients with Type 2 diabetes and for patients with newly diagnosed Type 1 diabetes and has undertaken the postgraduate certificate for diabetes management in Portsmouth Hospital.

Sharon Allard
Sharon Allard

As a research nurse since 1989, Sharon Allard has been responsible for the management of Clinical Research Projects within the Diabetes Centre for the Portsmouth Hospitals Trust.

Since 2003, Sharon has also worked as a diabetes specialist nurse within the multidisciplinary team of the Portsmouth diabetes service. Her role there enables her to autonomously assess, plan and implement evidence based specialist care for patients referred to the Diabetes Centre.

She is involved in group education, which includes being a trained educator for the DESMOND programme, providing structured education for self-management for people newly diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes.
